COVID has brought it’s challenges and limitations to RHoK - No hackathons being the biggest of those! - but the restrictions of the pandemic have, for many of us, opened new doors we weren’t brave enough to try until now.

There’s no better time to jump into some exciting new ways for for-purpose organisations and individuals to get into Random Hacks of Kindness!

“When I first got exposed to Random Hacks of Kindness and the whole concept of ‘hacking for good’, I’d worked in the not-for-profit sector for a good 20 years already and was part of a fairly large organisation in Victoria called UnitingCare. At the time, we were trying to create an innovation hub based around client satisfaction, which is very difficult to track in aged care/disability, and we ran out of ideas quite quickly. So I took to the Internet in search of fresh input and that’s when I stumbled upon RHoK’s hackathon event…”

Being a recipient of an Atlassian Foundation Grant was already a huge thing for RHoK... The ability to not only continue doing what we do (and love!) but to also explore seeding some regional RHoK’s in other states, beyond Vic, NSW and Queensland.

I’ve always been really passionate about technology and being a positive force in what might sometimes seem like a bleak world. Random Hacks of Kindness is the perfect marriage of both passions and I was eager to join in, hacking to make a positive change.

On November 28th and 29th, 2016, a group of passionate people came together to the Random Hacks Of Kindness Brisbane event hosted at News Corp in Bowen Hills.

Well, we did in the end, but let’s talk about how we got their first as I ventured into my second experience at a Random Hacks of Kindness Hackathon.

I love hackathons. That’s why for 7 years I organized nearly 40 hackathons at Facebook. At first, I simply did it because I loved the energy of all the people and the freedom to explore ideas outside the scope of my day job.

We sat down with one of our newest changemakers, Robert Dane at the recent summer hackathons and asked him a few questions. Robert is the CEO of Ocius, a really great little project to use a self-powered ocean going drone to gather data about changes in sea temperatures.
